Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79 after a prolonged illness. He breathed his last at 1:20 pm while undergoing treatment at Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. He was suffering from kidney disease for a long time. He was admitted to the hospital on May 11 after his health deteriorated further. The news of Satyapal Malik's death was given on his social media account. Satya Pal Malik was also the Governor of Bihar. He has been in the headlines for his candid views on the farm agitation, corruption and many national issues. Satyapal was the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 23, 2018 to October 30, 2019. During his tenure, article 370 was removed from Jammu and Kashmir on this day, August 5, 2019. Satyapal was born on July 24, 1946. He was the 10th and last Governor of Jammu and Kashmir from 2018 to 2019. In addition, he also served as the Governor of Goa and Meghalaya. He was a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 1974-77. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1980-86 and 1986-89 and a member of the 9th Lok Sabha from 1989-91. He was also the Governor of Bihar. Know about Satyapal Malik. On May 22, the CENTRAL Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a charge sheet against five people, including Satyapal Malik, in a corruption case related to the Kiru hydropower project in Jammu and Kashmir. There are allegations of fraud in civil works contracts worth about Rs 2,200 crore. On February 22, 2024, the CBI raided the premises of Satyapal Malik in connection with the case. Raids were also conducted at 29 other places in Delhi. On October 17, 2021, Malik had said at an event in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, that he was offered a bribe of crores of rupees when he was the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. In the meantime, two files came to him. One of them belonged to a big businessman and the other belonged to a person who was a minister in the coalition government of Mehbooba Mufti and the BJP. Malik said his secretaries had told him that there was a scam in this. He then cancelled both the deals. He was offered Rs 150 crore for both the files. Malik said, 'I said that I have come with five kurta-pajamas and will leave with only that from here. When the CBI asks, I will also reveal the names of the offerees." The CBI had filed FIR in two separate cases. The CBI had filed two FIRs in the case. The first FIR pertains to alleged corruption in issuing contracts worth around Rs 60 crore. The amount was taken as a bribe from an insurance company to award a contract for the Jammu and Kashmir Employees Health Care Insurance Scheme in 2017-18. The second FIR relates to corruption in awarding a Rs 2,200 crore contract to a private company for the civil work of the Kiru Hydropower Project (HEP) in 2019. The CBI is investigating both these cases.
