New blood group 'CRIB' found in Karnataka: Discovered after 10 months of research; This is extremely rare, only 10 people in the world have

A 38-year-old woman from Karnataka's Kolar district has been diagnosed with a blood group that has not yet been identified anywhere in the world. It has been named CRIB. So far, only 10 people with this blood group have been found in the world. The matter came to light when the woman was admitted to the hospital for a heart surgery. The woman's blood group was O Rh+, which is considered to be the most normal, but when blood was collected for surgery, no O positive unit matched her body. The case was serious so the sample was sent for testing to the advanced lab of Rotary Bengaluru TTK Blood Centre in Bengaluru. The team also tested the blood samples of 20 relatives of the woman, but there was no match. Dr. "We conducted advanced testing, which found that the patient's blood was 'pan-reactive' for each sample, meaning it did not match with any other blood group. We suspected that this could be a new or very rare blood group. With the help of doctors and family, the surgery was successfully completed without any blood donation. In addition, blood samples of the woman and her family were sent to the International Blood Group Reference Lab (IBGRL) in Bristol, UK. After ten months of research and genetic testing, scientists finally discovered an entirely new blood group antigen in this woman. Highlights related to CRIB Blood Group: Full Name: Chromosome Region Identified as Blood Group Series: INRA (Indian Rare Antigen) System First Discovery: International Experts in India Confirm Importance: Life-Saving Role in Pregnancy and Blood Donation Rarity: Only 10 persons have been found in the world so far What is CRIB Blood Group? The full form of CRIB is the chromosome region known as the blood group. It belongs to the INRA (Indian Rare Antigen) blood group system, which was approved by the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) in 2022. The CRIB blood group does not contain the same common antigen as most people. Because of this, only CRIB-negative blood can be given to a person with crib blood group, which is extremely rare all over the world. What are its effects? Identifying a CRIB blood group can prove to be life-saving in cases where a pregnant woman's body develops antibodies that damage the blood of the fetus. In such cases, timely testing and precautions can be taken. Doctors say that if a woman with this blood group needs blood again in the future, then she will not have to depend on the donation of others. He will have to pre-store his blood through autologous transfusion. The discovery was presented at an international medical conference in Milan, Italy last month, where it was considered a major achievement. Doctors believe that this discovery can make India a hub of immuno-hematology research globally. Immuno-hematology is a specialized medical branch that studies the interaction and response between antigens and antibodies in our blood. Scientists are now trying to develop specific antibody panels and screening tests to identify CRIB so that such cases can be identified early.
