'Sholay': Farhan Akhtar asks why the climax of the film had to be changed

One of bollywood's most memorable films, 'Sholay' is going to complete 50 years on August 15. Recently, filmmaker Farhan Akhtar has shared an unknown thing related to the film. Speaking on Prakhar Gupta's YouTube channel, Farhan said, "The real strength of this film was its emotional story. The entire story revolved around taking revenge after cutting Off Thakur's hands. We all get caught up in Jai-Veeru's talk, but the real story was about an honest police officer who sets out from a bandit to avenge the murder of his family. He keeps two unemployed people together, and at the original end, he kills Gabbar, but the end had to be changed due to the Emergency. He is now like to find the original ending in which he crushes Gabbar with his feet and then cries. Farhan also revealed that his father Javed Akhtar, who wrote 'Sholay' with Salim Khan, was not happy with the change. "When Papa and Salim sahab had to change the ending, they jokingly said that now the villagers, the police, all have come, only the postman is left. They could not understand the arrival and end of the police, but they were helpless. Sholay is the story of two criminals Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jay (Amitabh Bachchan), who are hired by a retired police officer (Sanjeev Kumar) to catch the dreaded dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). The film starred Hema Malini as Basanti and Jaya Bachchan as Radha, who was veeru and Jay's love interest. The music of the film is R.D. It was given by Burman. 'Sholay' ran for five consecutive years at Minerva Theatre in Mumbai and broke records across the country. It was also very successful abroad, especially in the Soviet Union. The film went on to become the highest grossing film of that time and maintained this record for years. It was named the 'Best Indian Film' in the British Film Institute's 2002 list and 'Best Film in 50 Years' at the 2005 Filmfare Awards.
