Continuous efforts are being made by the Bhavnagar division of Western Railway for the protection of lions and other wildlife. As per the directions of the board, people operating the trains are operating with special caution by following the prescribed speed. A total of 159 lions were rescued in the last financial year 2024-25 with the help of alertness of pilots of Bhavnagar railway board and forest trackers of the forest department. In the current financial year 2025-26, a total of 29 lions have been saved so far. Atul Kumar Tripathi, senior divisional commercial manager of Bhavnagar Mandal, said that on August 4, the people were deployed by pilot Baliram Kumar (headquarters - Junagadh) and assistant loco pilot Hardeep Garla (headquarters - Junagadh) between Junagadh-Veraval meter gauge section. Between 11/01 and 11/02, four lions, a lioness and their three cubs were seen sleeping on the railway track, when the pilot immediately stopped the passenger train (52946) going from Junagadh to Veraval by applying emergency brakes. Later, the forest tracker came and removed the lions from the track and after observing that the situation was normal, the pilot was allowed to run the train.
