On Monday, a special CBI court pronounced the sentence in the 1993 fake encounter case in Punjab's Tarn Taran. The court has sentenced five police officers, including retired SSP Bhupendrajit Singh and retired DSP Davinder Singh, to life imprisonment. All of them were booked under sections 302 and 120-B of the IPC on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy. Initially, 10 policemen were made accused in the case, but five policemen died during the trial. In 1993, seven youths were shown dead in an encounter.
The case dates back to 1993, in which seven youths were shown dead in two separate encounters. While 4 of them were posted as Special Police Officers (SPO). On July 28, 1993, a fake encounter was carried out under the leadership of the then DSP Bhupendrajit Singh. Two separate FIRs were registered for fake police encounters at Thana Vairowal and Thana Sahrali in Tarn Taran. Seven youths were killed in this fake encounter.
