Aluminium foil can startle cats into avoiding countertops, but the reaction has less to do with fear and more with sensory overload. Veterinarians say the foil’s high-frequency crinkle, unfamiliar texture and reflective surface can overwhelm cats’ finely tuned hearing and instincts. The effect, however, is usually temporary, as most cats adapt once the novwelty fades.
