‘Animals not chattels’: Karnataka high court refuses custody of 9 rescued dogs to owner accused of abuse

Bengaluru's High Court has overturned a magistrate's order to return nine rescued dogs to their owner, KE Ramesh, who faces severe animal cruelty allegations including repeated beatings and sexual abuse. Justice M Nagaprasanna, calling the lower court's decision "preposterous," emphasized animals' right to dignity and protection, stating that a civilized society extends mercy to voiceless creatures. The court stressed that protecting animal life is a constitutional imperative.
