The results of the Assam Assembly elections are out. Of the 126 MLAs, 63 have been re-elected. Of all the newly elected MLAs, 21 (17%) have criminal cases and 19 (15%) have serious criminal cases against them. The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has released this report. According to the report, 3 MLAs have been booked for attempt to murder and 2 have cases of atrocities against women. The number of MLAs with serious offences has increased from 8 in 2011 to 19 in 2026 i.e. more than doubled. As many as 107 (85%) MLAs in the new Assembly are crorepatis. In 2011, the number was 47 (37%). The assets of 25 MLAs are more than Rs 10 crore. 74 BJP MLAs are crorepatis. AIUDF's Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal has the highest assets of Rs 226 crore. He is the owner of Ajmal, a well-known perfume brand. In Assam, the BJP has won 82 seats, the Congress 19, the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) 10 seats each. Others have got 5 seats. According to the party, 14 out of 82 BJP MLAs and 16 out of 19 Congress MLAs have criminal cases against them. While there is no criminal case against any BPF MLA. Serious criminal cases: 14 Congress MLAs are crorepatis, a total of 107 (85%) MLAs are crorepatis. In 2021, the number was 85. 90 per cent of the BJP MLAs and 14 out of 19 Congress MLAs are crorepatis. The total assets of 126 MLAs are Rs 1,112 crore. The average assets of each MLA is around Rs 8.82 crore, which has doubled since 2021. Of the 85 BJP MLAs, 74 are crorepatis. As many as 25 MLAs have assets worth more than Rs 10 crore, 32 have assets worth Rs 5-10 crore and 50 have assets worth Rs 1-5 crore. 15 have assets worth Rs 20 lakh-Rs 1 crore and only 4 have assets below Rs 20 lakh.
