Petrol and diesel have become costlier by Rs 3-3 per liter. In Delhi, petrol will now be available at Rs 97.77 per liter. The price of diesel has gone up to Rs 90.67 per liter. The new prices have come into effect from May 15. This price has been increased after almost 2 years. Along with the prices of petrol and diesel, CNG has also become costlier by Rs 2 per kg in major cities. In Delhi, one kg of CNG will now cost Rs 79.09. Opposition parties have strongly criticised the central government. He accused the government of increasing the burden on the common man amid rising inflation and economic pressure. The Congress took a dig at the government over the hike, saying that 'inflation man' Modi has once again whipped the people today. Elections are over, Modi's recovery has begun. On the other hand, SP's Akhilesh Yadav shared a cartoon and wrote, "We have already said that there is nothing better than a bicycle. If you want to move forward, bicycles are the only option. New Petrol Prices in Metros New Diesel Prices in Metros Note: These are the possible prices. On the other hand, the rupee fell 50 paise to a record low of 96.14 against the dollar. Earlier on Thursday, the rupee had hit an all-time low of 95.64. The rupee has been continuously depreciating for the last few days. The rupee has been under pressure since the beginning of 2026. Last year, in December 2025, the rupee crossed the 90-mark for the first time. This has increased the risk of inflation. Market experts believe that if crude oil prices continue to rise and geopolitical tensions do not subside, the rupee may touch the 100 level soon. Read the full story... Prices of other items may also go up... The increase in diesel prices has a direct impact on the pockets and kitchens of the common man. Understand it this way: Freight fares will go up: Truck and tempo fares will go up, making vegetables, fruits and rations from other states more expensive. Cost of cultivation: Farmers will have to spend more to run tractors and pumping sets, which will increase the cost of foodgrains. Bus-auto fares: Public transport and school buses may also see an increase. Why have the prices of petrol and diesel increased? The main reason for this increase is the volatility in the prices of crude oil in the international market. Before the war between Iran and the United States, the price of crude oil was $ 70 per barrel, which has now risen to $ 100 per barrel. Oil companies were under pressure due to rising crude prices. So the companies have taken this step to compensate for the losses. If crude oil prices continue to rise for a long time, the prices of petrol and diesel may increase further. Petrol and diesel prices in the country have remained stable since March 2024. Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the government had given relief to the people by reducing the price by Rs 2 per litre. However, technically the price of fuel in India is controlled and companies can change the price on a daily basis based on the 15-day average price of international crude, but due to political sensitivity, there was no change in it for a long time. According to the government, state-owned companies like Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum were incurring losses due to high crude oil prices in the international market. According to Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum, the companies are losing about Rs 30,000 crore every month on the sale of petrol, diesel and LPG. Petrol and diesel prices in Delhi: Will the prices continue to rise? Experts believe that this increase of Rs 3 is not enough. These companies still need to increase the price of petrol by Rs 28 per litre and diesel by Rs 32 per litre to fully compensate for their losses and come to a 'break-even' situation. At present, there is a reduction of 29.5 per cent on petrol and 36.5 per cent on diesel. If supply in the global energy market continues to be affected in the same way due to the Iran war, then there could be a further increase in the coming days. Earlier, the government had reduced the special excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 10 each to keep the prices of petrol and diesel stable. The duty on petrol was reduced from Rs 13 per litre to Rs 3 per litre, while on diesel from Rs 10 to zero. The central government used to levy a total excise duty of Rs 21.90 per litre on petrol. After the reduction in special additional excise duty, it came down to Rs 11.90. Similarly, the total central excise duty on diesel has come down from Rs 17.8 per litre to Rs 7.8 per litre. This decision of the government was to keep the prices of petrol and diesel stable. Due to this decision, the prices of petrol and diesel did not increase. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday suggested the use of petroleum products carefully in view of the geo-political situation in West Asia. The Prime Minister said that the need of the hour is to use petrol, gas and diesel with utmost restraint. We should use imported petro products only as per the requirement. This will not only save foreign exchange, but will also reduce the adverse effects of war. ------------------ also read this news...
