France entered the tournament with the aim of reaching the World Cup final for the third time in a row. France had earlier scored 10 goals in the group stage and strengthened their chances of winning the tournament by winning all three of their matches against Senegal, Norway and Iraq. Sweden, on the other hand, finished third in their group behind the Netherlands and Japan. They started the season brightly with a 5-1 victory over Tunisia, but then lost to the Netherlands by the same margin. Sweden then secured their place in the knockout stage by drawing 1-1 with Japan in their last match, but the challenge they are now facing is the toughest challenge of the tournament
