On the evening of June 18, 2023, Nijjar was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen near the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. He was in his car in the parking lot outside the gurdwara. Meanwhile, two youths came on a motorcycle and started firing. Nijjar did not get time to get out of the car and died on the spot.
