How will Delhi Police's body worn cameras work in the protest? Know the technology

Questions are being raised about the action of the police during the protests in Delhi and their treatment of the protesters. Meanwhile, a small device on the uniform of policemen on duty in the capital has come into the limelight. At first glance, it looks like a walkie-talkie, but its job is to record events instead of talking.

The Delhi Police has given these devices to the personnel handling security arrangements at the protest sites and on the roads leading to the Election Commission of India office. In such a situation, the question is arising as to how this technology works and what will be its use during crowd control. So let's know how the body worn cameras of the Delhi Police will work in the midst of the demonstration.

What are Body Worn Cameras?

These small cameras installed on the uniform are called body-worn cameras. They are usually installed near the chest, shoulder or collar of policemen. Despite being small in size, these cameras can also record audio along with video. Through them, a record of incidents during duty, conversations and police action can be prepared. These cameras are especially used in situations where the police have to handle a large crowd or there are different claims about an incident.

The body worn cameras can be turned on or off manually by the policemen as per the need. Some models also have technology that can automatically turn on the camera during a particular activity. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Delhi High Court amid the protests. It demanded that body worn cameras be made mandatory for the Delhi Police as well as the Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel deployed for crowd control, demonstration management and crowd dispersion. The petition also sought that a standard operating procedure be made to keep the cameras running continuously from the start of duty till the end of the duty, although the Delhi High Court refused to direct the cameras to be made mandatory and left the decision to the government.
