Jacqueline's bid to become a 'government witness' backfired!: Court withdraws plea to be approved after ED opposition; Actress accused in Rs 200 crore extortion case
Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez on Tuesday withdrew her plea from Delhi's Patiala House Court seeking to become a prosecution witness in a Rs 200 crore money laundering case. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had strongly opposed his plea. "Jacqueline is not a victim in this case but has been a major beneficiary of this crime," the agency said. Why did the ED oppose Jacqueline's plea?
The ED filed its reply in the court on Monday. The probe agency said that Jacqueline's role in the case is not very small. He has taken advantage of the money collected through money laundering. The ED had argued that making Jacqueline a government witness would be tantamount to tampering with justice as she has committed serious crimes. The agency termed its plea as an abuse of the legal process. Despite knowing Sukesh's black deeds, she kept taking gifts worth crores
The ED in its reply revealed that Jacqueline remained in touch with Sukesh Chandrasekhar despite knowing about his criminal background. Sukesh arranged expensive gifts and comforts for Jacqueline and her family from the crime proceeds. The agency says that there was constant communication between the two and Jacqueline was being benefited, which proves that she was part of the conspiracy. Allegations of not providing accurate information during the investigation
The agency alleged that Jacqueline did not cooperate with the investigation. His statements kept changing frequently and he did not tell the whole truth. According to the ED, Jacqueline had initially concealed facts about cash transactions, expensive gifts and funds transferred to bank accounts. His statements have been described as incomplete and contradictory, for which he has been repeatedly confronted with evidence. The case pertains to fraudster Sukesh Chandrasekhar, who extorted Rs 200 crore from the wives of former Ranbaxy promoters Shivinder Singh and Malvinder Singh. Jacqueline was made an accused in the supplementary chargesheet in the case. Earlier, the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court had also dismissed the plea to quash the case against him.
