US midterm elections: Will the Trump government and parliament be affected? Understand why it is important

The main voting day for the 2026 midterm elections in the US is November 3, 2026. These elections remain a question of the credibility of US President Trump. There are two houses in the US Congress, i.e. Parliament. The Republican Party has 53 seats out of 100 seats in the Senate. The Democrats have 45 Senate members. There are 2 independent Senate members who are with the Democrats. Of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives, the Republicans have 218 members while the Democrats have 214 members. One member is an independent while two seats are vacant

In the US, the term of the president is four years. Elections that take place exactly two years after the president's four-year term are called midterm elections. The last presidential election in the US was held in November 2024. Donald Trump was elected president and took office in January 2025. His four-year term will end in January 2029.

midterm elections?

The House of Representatives has a total of 435 members. All these seats are elected every two years.   The Senate consists of a total of 100 members. Senators are elected for a six-year term and about one-third of the seats are elected every two years. In the 2026 midterm elections, elections are being held for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats in the Senate.

midterm elections affect the president?

The midterm elections in the US are not just elections to elect members of Congress, but they also have a direct impact on the functioning of the president and his government. The results of these elections can determine the political strength of the president, policies and the direction of the next two years of his term.

Why are congressional elections so important to the president?

The separation of powers in the US system of governance is very important. There are three major branches of government here:

  1. Legislature i.e. Congress
  2. Executive means the President and his administration
  3. judiciary i.e. the federal courts and the Supreme Court

The main job of Congress is to make laws, approve government spending, and monitor the activities of the executive. The president wants to fulfill his policies and election promises, but for this he needs the cooperation of Congress in many cases. If the president wants to enact a new law, he will usually have to get it passed by Congress. Similarly, Congress also has a role to play in important decisions related to the budget and government spending.

If the President's own party has a majority in Congress, it may be easier for him to push his agenda. If the opposition party gets a majority in the midterm elections, the President may face difficulties in passing legislation, making budget decisions, and implementing his policies.

term elections become a report card of presidential performance?

In the first two years of a president's term, the public evaluates his government on the basis of his decisions, economic policies, foreign policy, inflation, employment and other issues. If the public is satisfied with the performance of the president, his party may get relatively better results in the election. If the president's popularity declines, his party may have to lose congressional seats.

In general, the higher the president's approval rating, the less likely his party is to suffer. At the moment, Trump's popularity is at an all-time low, according to different surveys.

midterm elections usually cost the president's party

Dissatisfaction with the party in power, displeasure with the government's decisions, and the desire for change also influence election results. In 20 of the 22 midterm elections held from 1938 to 2022, the president's party lost its seats in the House of Representatives. American voters often use midterm elections to send a message to the president's party.

Does the president weaken after the midterm elections?

If the president's party loses its majority in either or both houses of Congress in the midterm elections, it may be difficult for the president to implement his agenda. Opposition parties can block the president's proposed laws. There may be a political deadlock over proposals related to the budget and government spending. Congress can increase scrutiny and oversight of the president's administration.

The president may have to negotiate and compromise with opposition parties for his decisions. If the opposition party gains a majority in the House of Representatives or the Senate, it gains more power to challenge the president's policies.

The change in control of Congress in the midterm elections does not mean that the constitutional powers of the President are terminated. The President remains the head of the executive during his term.

Do the results of the midterm elections predict the next presidential election?

The loss of the president's party in the midterm elections does not mean that it will lose the next presidential election. History shows that there is no definitive relationship between the results of the midterm elections and the next presidential election.

From 1952 to 2012, the party of the ruling president lost seats in the House of Representatives in the mid-term elections. Of these, 7 times the president's party managed to retain the White House in the next presidential election, while in 6 cases it lost the presidency.

2026 midterm elections Why are Donald Trump important?

The outcome of these elections will determine how much influence his party has in the US Congress in the last two years of his term. If the Republican Party manages to maintain its majority in both houses of Congress, it may be relatively easy for Trump to push his agenda.
