TLP demolishes 100-year-old temple in Pakistan, mixes it with madrasa

The face of radicalisation has once again emerged in Pakistan. Here in Punjab province, a Hindu temple more than 100 years old was demolished for allegedly converting its land into a madrasa. Authorities and minority organisations gave this information on Monday. Locals, minority organisations and a political party alleged that some religious fundamentalists demolished the temple to merge its land with a nearby madrasa. At the same time, the government claimed that the old temple collapsed on its own due to heavy rains.

PMMP chairman Aslam Parvez Sahotra said he met the Punjab Additional Home Secretary on August 28 and submitted a written application demanding action against the alleged accused and officials who failed to protect the temple. He alleged that the metal, other materials and debris bricks of the temple's spire were also removed from the temple later.

ETPB official Iftikhar said that the land adjacent to the temple was given on lease to set up a madrasa, but the temple land was not given on lease to anyone. He said that the decision on the reconstruction of the temple will be taken by senior ETPB officials. Ratan Lal, a member of the Narowal District Peace Committee and Pak Dharmasthan Hindu Samiti, said, "We are afraid to even go to that place because the madrasa is still operating there."
