Challenge of Countering Chinese Drones
Taiwanese companies were lagging behind in competition from Chinese companies, especially DJI. But the Ukraine-Russia war inspired Taiwan to see drones play a decisive role in the war
Dual-use drones and production target
Ministry of Defence and government institution NCSIST are jointly building military drones. The Ministry of Economy has collaborated with private companies' 'Dual-use drones' (For both commercial and military purposes) is planned. By 2028, a target has been set to make 15,000 dual-use drones every month. Currently, 700 military drones and 3,422 dual-use drones have been ordered. It is planned to order 1,000 drones from the US in 2024 and buy 47,000 drones by 2025
Flaws in the current strategy
Experts believe that Taiwan's strategy is still small-scale. According to the report of the US Naval Institute, the current number of drones will last four to five days in only the initial attacks. Ukraine plans to build 200,000 drones a month by 2025, while Taiwan's annual goal is the same
Strategy needs to change
drone According to experts, Taiwan should use its mountainous geography and forests to force the enemy to retreat. Lorenz Meier, CEO of the Ortarian company, said- " Launching drones from the hills can prove to be extremely difficult for the enemy
<>Lack of political will
engineer Jason Wang says Taiwan has the capability of hardware, but lacks understanding of the role of drones in combat, logistics and actual use. According to him, " For Taiwan, combat skills depend on political will, not capability."
Lack of military experience and history
Taiwan has not fought a direct military war with China since 1958. The conflict between China and Taiwan dates back to the 1940s, when Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan after being defeated in China's civil war.
Diplomatic isolation and limits of cooperation
Taiwan is today officially recognized by only 11 countries and the Vatican. The U.S. provides security assistance to Taiwan but has never guaranteed direct intervention in the war. Joint military exercises also take place unofficially
Defence Budget and Political Differences
In 2025, Taiwan has increased the defence budget to 2.45% of GDP. President William Lai wants to take it to 3%, but the opposition KMT is opposing it. The DPP government sees military power as a means of protecting democracy, while KMT wants to improve relations with China.
