Zohran Mamdani has officially secured the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York City, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo by a strong margin, primary results confirmed on July 1. The 33-year-old self-described democratic socialist and state assemblyman could become NYC’s first Muslim mayor if he wins the general election in November.
