A fire broke out in West Bengal's Haldia at around 2.45 am on Monday after an explosion in a pipeline supplying naphtha. Several houses in Chiranjeevpur area of Ward-13 of Haldia Municipality were affected by it. At least 15 people were injured in the incident. According to the police, all the injured were admitted to Haldia sub-divisional hospital. 5 people were referred to Tamluk Medical College and Hospital. The condition of 2 of them is critical. More than 12 fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire. Officials said the fire was first seen in the naphtha pipeline of Haldia Petrochemicals. The fire soon spread to a nearby residential area. A railway line passing through the vicinity was also disrupted due to the fire. 3 Pictures of the Fire... The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, police said. The entire area has been covered. The fire also damaged railway overhead power line equipment near the spot. Haldia Petrochemicals has issued a statement on the incident. The company said that several people were reportedly injured in the accident and the company is providing all possible support to the affected people and the administration. According to the company, preliminary information suggests that the incident may have taken place around the site of the theft of naphtha near the plants. However, the exact cause of the fire is being investigated with the concerned agencies. The company said that naphtha is a highly flammable hydrocarbon.
