These cosmetics can be dangerous for pregnant women, AIIMS research reveals

Harmful Chemicals In Cosmetics: A new study has raised concerns about cosmetics, plastics and some personal care products used during pregnancy. A joint study led by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi has found that the amount of chemicals in the body of pregnant women is increasing, which can interfere with the normal functioning of hormones. According to experts, these chemicals can have long-term effects on the health of not only the mother but also the developing child in the womb

Where are these chemicals used?

641 healthy pregnant women were included during the study. Urine samples were taken at different stages of pregnancy to find out the presence of these chemicals in the body. In the test, the highest amount of methylparaben was found. It is a type of preservative, commonly used in cosmetics, skin care products, lotions, shampoos, and many other personal care products

Monoethylphthalate was also found to be high

In addition, the researchers found high amounts of monoethyl phthalate. This chemical is used in the manufacture of products made from plastic and many products with artificial fragrances. According to scientists, both of these fall under the category of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals, which can affect the body's hormonal system><

The level of these chemicals is highest during the second trimester

The study also found that levels of these chemicals were highest during the second trimester of pregnancy. According to AIIMS researcher Tarang Gupta, this is the time when the organs and body of the baby in the womb are developing very fast. Excessive exposure to chemicals that interfere with the function of hormones during such sensitive periods can have a negative impact on the health of the child in the future><

Professor Rajesh Khargawat, Department of Endocrinology, AIIMS, said that newborns of women who had higher levels of these chemicals also had effects on birth weight, height, and vitamin D levels. However, he clarified that the current study only points to this relationship. This relationship needs to be fully substantiated at a larger scale and more detailed research><

Need to make stricter rules

According to experts, there is a need to make more stringent rules for the use and monitoring of these chemicals in India. At the same time, it is important to make pregnant women aware that excessive use of plastic and the chemicals present in some cosmetic products can pose a potential risk. Therefore, choosing personal care products that contain fewer chemicals and safer may be a better option<>
