The Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) has announced its first candidate for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The party has fielded Satwant Singh from Bassi Pathana assembly seat. Satwant is the son of Kehar Singh who was hanged in the Indira Gandhi assassination. Satwant Singh's candidature was announced by party working president Tarsem Singh. Tarsem Singh is the father of jailed Khalistan MP Amritpal Singh. On October 31, 1984, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was shot dead by two of her security guards, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh. Kehar Singh was also involved in the conspiracy to commit the murder. The court convicted him of criminal conspiracy and sentenced him to death. He was hanged in Tihar Jail on January 6, 1989. Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, who is also the son of Beant, who was involved in the assassination of Indira Gandhi, is also an MP from Faridkot Lok Sabha seat. His name is prominently appearing in the election strategy of the Waris Punjab Dey Party. Sarabjit is the son of Beant Singh, who assassinated former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
