The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the US FDA have stated that children under the age of 4 should not be given dextromethorphan or similar over-the-counter syrup. The FDA report states that such syrups can cause difficulty breathing, sleep disturbances, dizziness, seizures, and even death. Many reports have also stated that it should not be given to children below 2 years of age and should be given in limited quantities to children between the ages of 2 and 6 years. In addition, people above 6 years of age should use it only under medical supervision.
