Editor's View: SIR's Brahmastra goes on in Bengal: 'fake' voters disappear and Mamata loses stronghold; Didi's blast of not resigning, what will happen now? Accurate Analysis

"We have not lost," Mamata Banerjee said, "We have not lost. We have been defeated. BJP looted our 100 seats in the name of SIR. I'm not going to resign. Mamata is still angry because of SIR. To win the Bengal elections, the BJP had a Brahmastra called SIR. SIR stands for Special Incentive Revision. Deletion of names of dead, fake or migrated voters from the list. The BJP worked day and night on SIR in Bengal. On the other hand, Mamata had to set a narrative in Bengal that the BJP will take away your rights from SIR. Don't vote for him. For this, Mamata Banerjee led agitations, went up to Delhi, talked about impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Despite all the efforts, the names of Mamata's so-called fake Bangladeshi voters were erased. The BJP won with its Brahmastra. After all, how did SIR work in Bengal, why did the fear of Sir not go away? Today let's talk about it. The process of SIR started in 12 States and 3 Union Territories of the country including West Bengal from 28th October 2025. The verification of voters in Bengal began on November 1. In Bengal, 80,000 BLOs, 8,000 supervisors and 3,000 assistant election officers were put to work. Some died of stress and some committed suicide under the pressure of work. In Bengal alone, 39 people died due to the SIR procedure. Mamata made this an issue. Mamata had then said at a rally in Murshidabad that the BJP wanted to open detention camps in West Bengal under the pretext of SIR. I will not let this happen. First know how Mamata Banerjee opposed SIR before the elections? On March 13, two days before the election was announced, the TMC-led Opposition gave a notice in Parliament to bring an impeachment motion against Gyanesh Kumar. This is the first time since independence that there has been a demand for impeachment against the Chief Election Commissioner. In this 10-page notice, the TMC gave 7 reasons for the removal of Gyanesh Kumar from the post of CEC. Mamata alleged that in the name of SIR, the BJP wants to win the elections by cutting the votes of the common people of West Bengal. The BJP replied that the SIR process in West Bengal is necessary to remove fake voters from the voters' list. Because there are a large number of 'Rohingya infiltrators' in West Bengal who are supported by the Mamata government. Mamata went to Delhi to set a narrative against SIR. He fought in the Supreme Court. Following the Supreme Court order, the date of final electoral roll was fixed on February 28, 2026. In the first final voters' list released on February 28, the names of 64 lakh voters were deleted. Mamata Banerjee also met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi. He had taken with him 5 voters who were declared dead in the electoral rolls under SIR. Mamata took out a rally with banners on the streets of Bengal, held rallies against SIR. What happened after SIR in Bengal? More than 25,000 names were deleted from 147 constituencies in Bengal. A large chunk of this went to the BJP. The party won 95 of these 147 seats, while the Trinamool Congress won nearly half of the 51 seats. The Congress won only one. The BJP again emerged victorious in 67 seats that were eliminated between 15,000 and 25,000. Of these, the BJP won 47 seats, the Trinamool Congress 19 and the Congress one. Of the 62 seats between 5,000 and 15,000, the BJP won 50 and the rest were won by the Trinamool Congress. The BJP won all the 13 seats with less than 5,000 seats. Now understand the mathematics of SIR in Bengal with these graphics. BJP has benefited from the deletion of 47 lakh voters in SIR. A total of 91 lakh names have been deleted in the SIR. Of these, 47 lakh are of dead people. If we understand mathematics on the basis of this, then this time the BJP has got a majority with 208 seats. While the TMC was reduced to 82 seats. The fear of SIR among the voters of West Bengal did not go in favour of the TMC. In fact, there was a rumour on the ground that citizenship could also be lost after the name was deleted from the voter list. Those whose names survived in the voters' list tried to cast their votes 100% at any cost with the same fear. The BJP got the benefit of this bumper voting. Political analyst Debanjan Banerjee explained the math of the BJP's victory. According to him, "In the last two elections, the TMC got around 2.86 crore votes and the BJP got 2.26 crore votes. That is, the TMC was ahead by about 60 lakh votes. Now the names of about 47 lakh dead people have been removed from the list in SIR. Most of them are believed to have been TMC supporters. The TMC used to get votes even in the name of dead voters. This time, the BJP directly benefited from the dead voters. The real game took place in those seats where there is a win or loss by a very small margin. In the 2021 assembly elections, the victory and defeat of less than 1,000 votes in 30 seats was decided. In 50 seats, there was a gap of two to five thousand votes. In 100 seats, the margin of vote was between 5,000 and 10,000. As soon as 47 lakh votes were reduced, the results of the seats were reversed and the BJP gained 150 seats directly. The BJP added the word "infiltrator" to the SIR and created fear among the people. In Bengal, more names were cut in the SIR in rural areas. Political analyst Dr. Sibaji Pratim Basu says, "On the removal of names from the voter list, the Election Commission only said that the matter was related only to the SIR. The BJP linked this with the word intruder. This has led to the fear of losing citizenship in the minds of the people. They will be expelled from the country for being Bangladeshi. There was also a fear that their driving license and ration card would be taken away. Then how will they work outside Bengal. Senior journalist Suman Bhattacharya also believes that the vote percentage due to SIR has increased compared to the last time. The BJP has benefited from this. SIR turns the tide in Muslim-majority areas During the SIR process, most of the duplicate or fake names were removed from Muslim-majority areas. In Murshidabad district, more than 4.55 lakh names were deleted. The names of 3.25 lakh voters from North 24 Parganas and 2.40 lakh voters from Malda were deleted. In 2021, the Trinamool Congress had won 20 of the 22 seats in Murshidabad. This time it was reduced to only 9. This shows that there has been a huge split of minority votes because of the SIR. The same trend was seen in North 24 Parganas. In 2021, the Trinamool Congress had won 28 of the 33 seats in the district. This time it has come down to only 8. In 2021, the TMC had won 8 of the 12 seats in Malda. This time only 6 have won. The rest was won by the BJP. Mamata Banerjee said, "I will not resign. What will happen now? Mamata Banerjee is upset after the huge defeat in the election. Mamata cannot live without power. He held a press conference today and alleged that the BJP has looted our 100 seats by bringing SIR. Now our fight is not with the BJP but with the Election Commission. We have been defeated. This is a murder of democracy. When the counting of votes was going on, I was not allowed to go, I was kicked. I'm not going to resign. Last There is an interesting case of Sir himself. The thing is that in the SIR of Bengal, Mohtab Shaikh's name was removed from the voters' list due to technical reasons. Mohtab Shaikh was to contest the election from the Congress. He collected all the evidence that he was an Indian citizen and went to the Supreme Court. The CJI ordered an inquiry in the Appellate Tribunal. The appellate tribunal examined the passport and other documents and declared him a valid voter. This was the first case of 27 lakh voters filing petitions in the Supreme Court. Interestingly, Mohtab Sheikh's name was included in the voters' list. He contested from the Farakka seat on a Congress ticket and won by defeating BJP's Sudhir Chaudhary by a margin of 8,000 votes.
