Former Delhi chief secretary commits suicide in Noida: Living alone in rented flat; Ex-IAS wife went to Dehradun to meet son

Former Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta committed suicide in Noida. He was 75 years old. Former IAS wife Sumanti Mehta called him several times on Sunday afternoon, but he could not be contacted. He then sent the society's guard to the apartment. Upon arrival, the guard found Rakesh Mehta's body hanging from the ceiling fan. Rakesh Mehta lived in a rented flat in Kendriya Vihar-2 Society in Sector-82. The police found a one-page suicide note from the spot. It was written that he was suffering from illness. He did not blame anyone for the incident. Rakesh Mehta was a 1975 batch IAS officer. He was close to former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit. The family cremated him in Delhi on Monday. The details of Rakesh Mehta's suicide came to light when the family reached the police on Tuesday. Rakesh Mehta was a resident of Dehradun. Rakesh Mehta was originally a resident of Dehradun. He had been living in Kendriya Vihar-2 Society in Noida's Sector-82 for about five years. His wife Sumanti Mehta has been an IAS officer of Delhi cadre. They have 2 children. The son is doing a PhD. The married daughter lives in London. At the time of the incident, Rakesh Mehta's wife Sumanti Mehta had gone to visit her son in Dehradun's Vasant Vihar. It was said that she was worried because her husband did not pick up the phone continuously. After this, the information of the matter reached the police. Mehta had worked in many important positions in the Delhi government and the municipal corporation during his administrative service. He had held important positions like the chief secretary of Delhi and the commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Mehta had many ailments. The police found a one-page suicide note written in English from the flat. In which Rakesh Mehta made it clear that he was tired of his illnesses. He was suffering from hypertension, BP, diabetes and tremors of the hands and legs. Rakesh Mehta was the Chief Secretary of Delhi from 2007 to 2010 Rakesh Mehta took over as the Chief Secretary of Delhi in 2007. He remained in this post till November 2010. He then retired. His tenure was during the tenure of the then Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. During this period, preparations and organizing of the 2010 Commonwealth Games took place in Delhi. Mehta also held many important positions in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. He was also the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. In an administrative career spanning more than three decades, he did a lot of work related to transport, electricity and civic amenities. According to the police, on September 6, 2026, the Phase-2 police station received information through dial-112 that Rakesh Mehta, aged about 75 years, had committed suicide. Rakesh Mehta was the son of Kulwant Ram Mehta. He lived in Central Vihar-2 in the Phase-2 police station area of Gautam Budh Nagar. As soon as the information was received, the local police reached the spot. A team of forensic and field unit also examined the spot.
