Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Saturday. The attack took place at his office near Pasteur Street in Tehran, where he was meeting with several top Iranian leaders. In this attack, Israel fired 30 missiles at the office, killing Khamenei and 40 officials. Israel had been preparing for this attack for many years. His intelligence agency, Mossad, and Unit 8200 hacked almost all of Tehran's traffic cameras. The camera's images were encrypted and sent to servers in Tel Aviv and southern Israel. The CIA, the American intelligence agency, also helped in this operation. It had a special camera as it could detect where the bodyguards and drivers of senior officials parked their private cars. These cameras gave Israel a lot of information about the officials, such as where their home is, when they come on duty, which route they take, and most importantly, which leader they protect or carry. This is called the 'Pattern of Life' in Intelligence. This information was very useful to Israel in killing Khamenei. This wasn't the only way. Israel and the CIA gathered a wide range of intelligence. Israel also hacked mobile phone towers around Pasteur Street so that the phone appeared busy at the time of the attack and the security team did not receive any warning.
An Israeli intelligence official said he knew Tehran as well as he knew Jerusalem. When you know a place so well, you notice even the smallest disturbances there. All this was done with data from Israel's Unit 8200 (Signal Intelligence), Mossad's Human Resources and Military Intelligence. He sprinkled billions of data points with a mathematical method called social network analysis and discovered new targets. Targeting intelligence is very important in Israel, if a decision is made to kill someone, the intelligence is ready to carry it out. "My death doesn't matter, the killing of Khamenei was a political decision, not just a technological marvel," Khamenei said. When the CIA and Israel learned that Khamenei was meeting in his office on Saturday morning and with several senior leaders, the opportunity seemed great. When the war broke out, it would have been difficult to find them, as they would have been hiding in bunkers. Khamenei did not go into hiding like Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Nasrallah had lived in the bunker for years, but Khamenei had sometimes said publicly that his death did not matter. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been the country's supreme leader since the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989. During the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, when Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was overthrown, Khamenei played a major role in the revolution. Khamenei was elected president in 1981 after the Islamic Revolution. He held this post for 8 years. He was succeeded by Iran's Supreme Leader Khomeini in 1989. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is now dead. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was against the policies of Reza Shah Pahlavi and advocated Islamic rule. He was also arrested in 1963 for making speeches against Shah. Gradually, he became a major face of the anti-government movement and became a trusted ally of Khomeini. In 1979, there was an Islamic Revolution in Iran and the Shah's government fell. Khomeini returned to the country and formed a new Islamic government. Khamenei found a place in the Revolutionary Council and was later appointed deputy defense minister. In 1981, Khamenei was bombed during a speech at a mosque in Tehran. In the same year, another bomb blast killed the then president. Khamenei won a landslide victory in the next election to become Iran's third president. After Khomeini's death in 1989, Khamenei was made the country's supreme leader. The constitution was also amended for this. Supporters see him as a strong defender of the Islamic system, while critics accuse him of running a harsh and orthodox regime. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's wife Mansureh Khozsteh Bagherzadeh has also passed away, two days after his death. Mansoureh was wounded in a US and Israeli attack two days ago. Khamenei was killed in the same attack. Iran's state media confirmed that Mansoureh succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment on Monday. Mansour married Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in 1964. At the time, Khamenei was active as a young cleric. Born in Mashhad in 1947, Mansureh comes from a religious family. His father, Ayatollah Mohammed Bagher, was a prominent cleric of Khojasteh Mashhad. In the 12-day war of June 2025, Israel killed many Iranian nuclear scientists and senior officials. At that time, Iran's air defense was destroyed by cyber attacks, small drones and precision missiles. Israel used the Sparrow missile, which can target small targets from a distance of more than 1000 kilometers. In this attack, Israeli jets flew for several hours and fired more than 30 precision missiles. The attack was carried out in the morning, which came as a surprise to Iran. Israel was confirmed to be in Khamenei's office by two secret agents. Israel has killed many people in the past, such as nuclear scientists and militant leaders. But killing a big leader like Khamenei is a huge step. The controversy over the nuclear deal between the United States and Iran has been going on. In the midst of the talks, the United States began to encircle Iran from January 2025. By the second week of February, the American carriers USS Gerald Ford and USS Abraham Lincoln had also arrived. It was the largest U.S. military deployment to the Middle East since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. On February 17, the second round of talks in Geneva on a deal between the US and Iran failed. After this, the United States started deploying about 150 of its fighter jets, fuel tanker planes, etc. On 24 February, 12 F-22s were deployed at Ben Gurion Air Base in Israel and Ovda Air Base in Israel.
