After the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has taken up the work of deepening and widening the historic Vishwamitri river passing through the city centre, the second phase of work will now be taken up before the monsoon. The work was started last year by the corporation and the irrigation department under the guidance of the Navlawala Committee for the rejuvenation and conservation of the river. After the first phase of the work, the second phase will now start before the monsoon. Work including gabion wall will be carried out in the area under the municipal corporation. Considering the gravity of the grave situation, a crucial decision was taken by the State Government to deepen and widen the river to augment its carrying capacity. Under the guidance of this committee, the work of strengthening and deepening of river embankments was taken up in a short span of 100 days last year, with the municipal corporation effectively completing the work in the city area and the irrigation department in the remaining areas. The plan is to provide facilities to the people while protecting the environment. All these projects are long-term and can be completed in the next 10 years. Work will be initiated for short-term planning, especially to mitigate floods. Ajwa and Pratappura lakes will be deepened this year as well. This work cannot be completed in a month. Applications have also been invited from contractors to deepen the lake, we are going to take royalty and hand over the work. Diversion canals and check dams will be constructed in the upper basin. In the long term, in addition to the diversion canal in the upper basin, the irrigation department is also planning to construct a check dam. The state government has 14 km. Permission has also been sought for canal diversion work, which will be taken up in the coming days. The work will be carried out after the work on the check dam. In order to provide permanent relief to the people of Vadodara from the dangers of floods, the administration and the irrigation department have taken up a long-term plan under the 'Vishwamitri Revival Project'. These various works ranging from increasing the depth and width of the river to the riverfront and protective gabion wall will completely change the face of the river in the coming years. While the administration is giving priority to pre-monsoon operations in view of the current monsoon, the residents of Vadodara are also hopeful that the Vishwamitri river will once again prove to be a blessing for the city with this project.
