New fuel will be made from farm waste! Know what is 2G ethanol technology and in which areas it will be useful
2G ethanol: ethanol has become an important part of India's energy sector today. The government is continuously increasing the amount of ethanol in petrol so that dependence on crude oil imports can be reduced. But one of the major concerns about ethanol is that it is produced from sugarcane and food grain crops, which can affect food security. The solution to this challenge has been brought by 2G i.e. Second Generation Ethanol Technology.
2G ethanol is considered an advanced technology for ethanol production. Its biggest feature is that it is prepared from agricultural residues and organic waste instead of edible crops. This not only saves food grains but also enables better utilization of agricultural waste burnt in the fields.
What is 2G ethanol?
Second-generation ethanol is a biofuel that is made from stubble, sugarcane bagas, maize stalks, bamboo and other agricultural wastes. While the first generation ethanol was mainly based on sugarcane juice or grains, 2G ethanol uses the entire agricultural waste
2G ethanol produced?
2G ethanol is manufactured through a modern and technological process. First of all, stubble, sugarcane bagasse, maize stalks or other agricultural residues are collected from the fields and transported to the plants. These materials are then cut into small pieces and their hard fibers are softened through a special chemical or steam based process.
The next step is to convert the complex carbohydrates present in these residues into simple sugars using special enzymes. This sugar is then fermented with yeast to form alcohol. Finally, high quality 2G ethanol is obtained by separating water through distillation and purification process.
Why is it important for the environment and energy security?
India meets a large part of its energy needs from imported crude oil. The widespread use of 2G ethanol can help reduce the country's dependence on foreign oil. Further, using agricultural waste instead of burning it can also reduce carbon emissions and pollution.
This technology is considered beneficial for farmers, the environment and the energy sector. Farmers can get additional income, pollution can be reduced and the country can also get an indigenous energy source.
It's not just limited to cars
Most people know ethanol only as a fuel used in vehicles, but the utility of 2G ethanol is much more than that. It can be used in the manufacture of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) which helps in reducing carbon emissions.
The residue from ethanol production plants can also be used in power generation. Some countries in the world are also working on ethanol-based engines and energy systems that can provide new clean energy options in the future.
