Manager-organizer arrested in Zubin Garg case: SIT team apprehends both men from different states: Wife files online complaint with Assam CID
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam CID has arrested North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and manager Siddharth Sharma in connection with the death of singer Zubin Garg. The team arrested the duo from different states. The SIT team arrested Shyamkanu Mahant after he arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi from Singapore at around 12:30 am on Wednesday. Siddharth Sharma was arrested from Rajasthan and kept overnight in Gurugram. Both have been brought to Guwahati. The Assam Police on Sunday launched a separate probe against event manager Mahanta, who is accused of being involved in organised financial crime and amassing wealth through money laundering in connection with the death of singer Zubin Garg, official documents accessed by news agency PTI. During raids on Thursday and Friday, the CID seized bundles of criminal documents and materials from Shyamkanu's house. The seized material includes several PAN cards issued in the name of the same firm, around 30 stamp seals of various companies and government offices, as well as documents related to several alleged benami properties. The CID is currently investigating Garg's death, as more than 60 FIRs have been filed across the state. Mahant was the main organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore where the singer had gone to perform. An FIR has also been lodged against about 10 others, including Sharma, the manager of the Assamese cultural icon. Shyamkanu is the younger brother of former DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, who is currently the Chief Information Commissioner of the Assam State Information Commission. His other elder brother is Nani Gopal Mahanta, who was the education advisor to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma before becoming the vice-chancellor of Gauhati University. Meanwhile, Zubin's wife Garima Saukia claimed that her husband Zubin Garg died due to negligence. He suspects everyone present and wants to know what happened to Zubin in his last moments. Talking to NDTV, Garima said, "Everyone present at the spot is under suspicion. We have filed an FIR. We suspect the organisers, the manager, the team members, everyone involved. We have full faith in our legal system. I am confident that this investigation will be conducted properly. We have requested an immediate probe. Garima explained that Zubin was initially reluctant to attend the North India Film Festival in Singapore as his schedule was busy with other projects. However, after repeated requests from organiser and friend Shyamkanu Mahant, he agreed to go. Zubin was born on November 18, 1972 in Tinsukia district of Assam. He was a singer, composer, lyricist, actor and director in the Assamese and Hindi film industries. Apart from this, the singer has sung more than 38,000 songs in 40 languages and dialects including Bishnupriya Manipuri, Adi, Boro, English, Goalparia, Kannada, Karbi, Khasi, Malayalam, Marathi, Missing, Nepali, Odia, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu and Tiwa. Zubin was the highest paid singer of Assam. Popular singer Zubin Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19. He had gone on a yacht for a water sports activity, where he went scuba diving without a life jacket, during which he died. Initially, it was believed that his death was an accident. As the circumstances became suspicious, an inquiry was initiated under the directions of the Assam government.
