While the Junagadh district jail is currently in controversy for some reason or the other, there was a lot of chaos in the jail premises yesterday. A violent clash broke out between Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) district president Haresh Savaliya and other inmates in a case of atrocity and molestation. Face-to-face complaints have been lodged that the incident was attacked with a sewer cover and casteist slurs were hurled. Attempted fatal attack with sewer lid
Sagar Kanjibhai Chavda, a resident of Kodinar and an accused in the case, has lodged a complaint against Haresh Savaliya at Junagadh A-Division police station with serious allegations. Haresh Savaliya was standing near the jail hospital in Sagar when he came out of there abusing caste. Haresh Savaliya got agitated when Sagar stopped him and abused him and thrashed him. It is further alleged that Haresh Savaliya lifted the drain lid and hit Sagar on the head with the intention of killing him, saying that you people have filed a false atrocity case against him. He was rescued when the sea receded. But an attempt was made to inflict fatal injury on him by knocking him down. Haresh Savaliya files complaint against 8 inmates
On the other hand, AAP leader Haresh Savaliya has also filed a counter-complaint against Sagar Chavda and 7 other unidentified prisoners. According to Savaliya, he was returning after completing his visit. At that time, Sagar and his gang formed an illegal society and stopped them. The men thrashed him indiscriminately and threatened to kill him for no reason. Haresh Savaliya sustained injuries and has been shifted to Junagadh Civil Hospital under police custody for treatment.
Jail superintendent's statement: 'A game played in a two-minute altercation'
Junagadh Jail Superintendent D.M. Gohil said Sagar and other prisoners with him were confronted when Haresh Savaliya was returning from a visit yesterday evening. The scuffle lasted only two minutes and the matter escalated into a scuffle. The jail staff immediately rushed to the spot and separated the two parties. After the examination of the jail medical officer, Haresh Savaliya was shifted to the Civil Hospital as he was found to be in need of further treatment. The Junagadh jail has a capacity of 265 and 610 inmates.
The incident has raised big questions about the security arrangements in Junagadh jail. The jail superintendent admitted that the Junagadh jail has a capacity of only 265 inmates, but at present there are 610 inmates. With more than twice the capacity of inmates, it is becoming challenging for the jail administration to maintain the system. The fact that equipment such as sewer caps inside the jail is used for the attack also indicates a lapse in the security of the jail. Complaint against Sagar Chavda and 8 others
Junagadh A-Division police have registered a case against Haresh Savaliya under new sections of BNS as well as the Atrocity Act on the complaint of Sagar Chavda. These include Sections 109(1), 115(2), 296(B) and various sections of Atrocity. On the complaint of Haresh Savaliya, a case was registered against Sagar Chavda and eight other persons under sections 189 (2), 115 (2) and 351 (3) of the BNS. R.A. Babaria is conducting further investigations. The violent clash has also sparked debates in the political arena, as Haresh Savaliya is a district level leader of the Aam Aadmi Party. At present, the jail administration has beefed up security by shifting prisoners of both groups to separate barracks.
