The Porbandar Municipal Corporation had taken strict action by conducting a special drive in April to maintain cleanliness in the city and curb the use of banned plastic. Under the guidance of the Commissioner and Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Sanitation Officer Jagdish Dhanki and Sanitary Sub Inspectors of various wards conducted inspections in different areas of the city. During this period, action was taken against 27 traders for using banned plastic bags of thickness less than 120 microns and administrative charges of Rs 5,900 were collected and approximately 12 kg of banned plastic was seized. In addition, a total of 48 persons were found to be littering in public places and selling fodder in an unauthorised manner and a fine of Rs. 20,500 was collected. The civic body has appealed to the citizens to maintain cleanliness, avoid the use of plastic and dispose of waste in the designated dustbin. Violators will be fined from Rs 100 to Rs 5,000. In March last year, the sanitation department of the municipal corporation took action against 45 traders for using banned plastic, fined Rs 33,500 and seized 649 kg of plastic. A fine of Rs 30,850 was collected.
