Increasing violence in Pakistan's Balochistan has put the US-Pakistan Reko Diq mining project in jeopardy. According to media reports, it is worth about ₹ 7.7 billion (Rs 64,000 crore). More than 500 fighters of the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) attacked several areas of Balochistan on January 31, killing 58 people, raising questions about the security of the Reko Diq mining project. The attackers targeted banks, police stations, jails and government buildings. Several places were set on fire and major roads were blocked, affecting connectivity between Quetta and Karachi. Some of the attackers also carried out suicide bombings. According to reports, the attackers used modern weapons such as automatic rifles and grenade launchers. Some of these weapons are said to be US weapons released in Afghanistan after 2021. Experts believe that such a large-scale attack would not have been possible without local support, a strong network and adequate weapons. Direct impact on Reko Diq project The attacks had an impact on Balochistan's most important mining project, Reko Diq. The area is known for its large deposits of gold and copper. Roads leading to the site remained closed for several days after the attacks, affecting operations. The project is considered to be the hub of economic partnership between the US and Pakistan. The United States has announced an investment of about $1.3 billion in the project, while the total investment could reach $2 billion. Canada's Barrick Mining Company has slowed the pace of the project for safety reasons and has said it will delay it until 2027. According to experts, if the Reko Diq project is affected, the US-Pakistan partnership could suffer a major blow. BLA's Growing Strength and Changes in Strategy Over the past few years, BLA's attacks have become more organized and technologically stronger. The outfit is now targeting not only security forces but also civilians and foreign investments. In videos released on social media, the BLA portrays its attacks as a 'freedom fight', due to which it is gaining support from local youth. Origins of separatism and local discontent Separatism in Balochistan began after the creation of Pakistan in 1948. Locals allege that the natural resources of their area are exploited by outside companies and the central government when they do not get basic amenities like employment, education and health. Due to this discontent, a section of educated youth is also inclined towards extremism. Balochistan borders Iran and Afghanistan. In such a situation, instability in these countries has a direct impact on the region. Pakistani officials fear that if the situation deteriorates in the eastern part of Iran, organizations like the BLA could become stronger and attacks from across the border could increase. The presence of other terrorist organizations is not only the BLA in Balochistan but also the regional network of the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) and ISIS is being activated. As a result, security challenges have become more complex. On the one hand, the government of Pakistan is trying to eliminate extremism through military action, on the other hand, it is planning to bring the youth into the mainstream through employment and financial assistance. However, human rights groups allege that many people are disappearing due to the government's crackdown, which has further increased the resentment among the local people.
