Ahmedabad: Sir P. T. Principal of Sarvajanik College of Science Dr. Prithul Desai has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat University. This appointment has been made in the name of the Governor under Section 10(4) of 'The Gujarat Public Universities Act, 2023'. Dr. The tenure of Dr. Desai will be for a period of five years from the date he assumes charge of the office or till he attains the age of 65 years (whichever is earlier). Dr. Prithul Desai has been appointed in place of Jagdish Joshi, the in-charge vice-chancellor.

It is noteworthy that, Gujarat University has been in controversy for a long time. One of the reasons for this is former vice-chancellor Neerja Gupta. This is the first time in the history of a government university that a public complaint has been officially called against a former vice-chancellor. A public notice in this regard has been put up on the official website of the university by the order of the in-charge vice-chancellor, under which any person or institution can lodge his complaint or representation against the former vice-chancellor. It is to be noted that there were numerous allegations against the former vice-chancellor in the past, but no proper investigation was conducted at that time
The in-charge vice-chancellor of Gujarat University Neerja Gupta has handed over an inquiry to a former judge of the high court over the allegations of corruption and financial irregularities against her. The university has invited public complaints and representations under this investigation. A public notice posted on the website of Gujarat University has sparked a debate in the entire higher education world, including the university campus. The University has given notice that proceedings have been initiated by the Truth Finding Committee headed by a retired judge in respect of the expenditure, appointments and projects incurred during the period from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2026 and other matters. Therefore, if any person, institution or organization has any representation in this regard, then in writing along with a Xerox copy of the Aadhaar card will be sent to the Atal Kalam Building of the University by October 30.
As stated in the notice, this notice has been issued by the order of the present in-charge Vice-Chancellor. This notice has sparked a debate as to why the in-charge Vice-Chancellor needed to issue such a notice. All the accounts and records are available in the university itself.
