40 crore 'blackmail' in IPL? Team owners are shocked by the demand of the players

a big crisis seems to be looming over the IPL team owners. The date of the auction is approaching and by November 17, everyone has to release their retention list. But next year's mega auction is already in the news. Some top players demand that Rs 40 crore be given to retain them, otherwise they will go to the mega auction next year. Rishabh Pant is the most expensive player in the IPL in the history so far, on whom LSG bid Rs 27 crore in the 2025 mega auction.

40 crore or else...

According to Cricbuzz, some of the top players have demanded a retention fee of Rs 40 crore. It is being told that some players have made their opinion clear in front of their respective franchises. The number of these players may increase in the coming days, as the players believe that they can get a better amount of money by taking entry in the auction.

If you remember IPL 2026, only Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Cameron Green, Heinrich Klaasen and Virat Kohli were the only five players who received more than 20 crores.

150 crore

There is a mini auction this year, but the mega auction is going to come in 2028. It is being speculated that the total purse of the teams in the IPL 2028 auction can be Rs 150 crore. If 40 crores are spent on a single player, then more than a quarter of the team's purse will end there. In such a situation, paying such a high retention fee can become a big headache for the franchise. The matter has not yet been formally considered.

Retention is a big trouble

Recall the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, before that all the teams were allowed to retain a maximum of five players. A maximum limit of Rs 75 crore was set for those 5 players. If the amount was more than that, the money would be deducted from the team's purse.

At that time, almost two-thirds of the franchise's purse was spent on only five players. Now there is talk of 40 crores, that too for just one player. If there is a retention of 40 crores, then it will be difficult for the franchise to make a top team in the remaining amount. Because there are definitely 4-5 marquee players in a team, who have been getting a hefty amount to play in the IPL for a long time.
