Massive protest against the mandatory implementation of helmets in Rajkot: Anger among the people

Following the order of the

state government, the traffic police in Rajkot today started strict implementation of the helmet mandatory law, which has led to a lot of anger among the citizens. Checking was carried out by more than 400 police personnel at about 40 major places in the city since morning and a fine of Rs 500 was collected from motorists without helmets

People protested in a unique way against this strict action of the

police. Bukharibhai, a citizen, protested with the slogan of 'remove the helmet' by wearing a towel on his head instead of a helmet. He said that wearing helmets confuses senior citizens and the root cause of accidents is bad roads and not helmets. "If you give in writing that wearing helmets will not lead to death, we will wear helmets," he said< >

On the other hand, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers also staged a protest at Praya Chowk by smashing helmets, following which several workers and leaders were detained by the police.

Police and Public Opinions: DCP Traffic Harpalsinh Jadeja said that the Helmets Act has been in force since 1988 and is aimed at protecting against head injuries in accidents. He added that Rajkot Police has also distributed more than 3,000 helmets free of cost

However, people say that many roads in the city are potholes, which lead to accidents. He raised slogans of "first fill potholes, then implement helmets." People argued that it was not right to make helmets mandatory for short distances in urban areas. Former minister Govindbhai Patel has also written a letter to the Chief Minister requesting the citizens of urban areas to be exempted from this rule
