OUT or NOT OUT? There was a ruckus over the run-out of the Pakistani batsman in the match against India, know what the rules say

Another controversy has surfaced in the India vs Pakistan match of the Women's World Cup 2025. After the toss controversy, Pakistan's opener Muneeba Ali's run out is in the news. The controversy has taken a formidable form because Muneeba was first declared not out, but when the third umpire reviewed again, it was found that Muneeba's bat was in the air. Therefore, the decision was changed and he was declared out.

This incident happened on the last ball of the fourth over of the Pakistani innings. Kranti Gaur was bowling, her ball hit Muneeba Ali's pad, so Team India appealed for LBW. The umpire called him not out, but in the meantime Muneeba was standing outside her crease. His feet were just outside the crease, but he was delayed in landing the bat on the ground.

The first replay showed that Muneeba had rested his bat on the ground, but after that he picked it up again. Incidentally, the ball hit the stumps at the same time when he raised the bat in the air again. Initially, Muneeba was declared not out, but when the third umpire reviewed the decision again, it was found that Muneeba's bat was in the air at the time of the ball hitting the stumps. This decision did not go down well with Pakistan team captain Fatima Sana, who came out of the dressing room to object to it. Fatima was also seen arguing with the fourth umpire.

What does the rule say?

MCC rule book states that a batsman shall be considered off the ground as long as no part of his body or bat is resting on the ground at that end. At the same time, Rule 30.1.2 says that the batsman will not be considered out of ground when he grounds any part of the body or bat inside the popping crease while running or diving, even if the player loses contact with the popping crease. Since Muneeba Ali was neither running nor diving, she was declared out.
