MPs of opposition parties first enjoyed vegetarian South Indian cuisine at the Shangri-La Hotel on Janpath Road at a dinner hosted by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and discussed the future strategy. After this, they boarded three buses and left for the demonstration at Jantar Mantar. The opposition MPs were stopped by the police in front of the Shangri-La Hotel on Ashoka Road. During this, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi and some other opposition leaders were detained.
Rahul Gandhi and some other leaders were taken away from the spot in a tempo traveller. After Rahul was detained, many Congress workers climbed on the roof of the traveller and started shouting slogans. There was sloganeering for a long time amid the presence of security forces on the spot. When stopped by the police, Priyanka Gandhi protested and lay down on the road. During this time, she had a copy of the Constitution in her hand. Opposition MPs wanted to go to Jantar Mantar to protest against the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

After being detained, Rahul Gandhi and some other leaders were taken to the Barakhamba police station. Some leaders of the Congress and the opposition alleged that the police misbehaved with the protesters.
