He has acted in many Marathi plays, including 'Hamida Bai Chi Kothi', 'Rose Tattoo'. Initially, Nana Patekar used to get only 50 rupees per play show. Because of this, he used to play cards during the rehearsals of the play and win money from it. Apart from this, he used to give massage to the famous Marathi theatre artist and actor Ashok Shroff and he used to give 5 rupees to Nana. Nana last worked in a play in 1996. Smita Patil got Ravi Chopra's film Nana Patekar knew actress Smita Patil from the time she read the news. It was Smita who asked Nana to work in Ravi Chopra's film 'Aaj Ki Awaaz' (1984), when Nana Patekar went to meet Ravi Chopra, he was offered the role of a rapist. As soon as he heard the role, Nana Patekar got angry and refused to work in the film and came down from the office abusing her. At this time, I met Smita Patil and Nana told me everything. At the behest of Smita Patil, Nana was then offered another role instead of a rapist. Nana had put a condition to work in this film and he wrote his role himself, not only that, he also shot the entry scene himself. He worked with Raj Babbar in this film. Despite having a small role, Nana Patekar won the hearts of fans and critics with his acting. It is a different matter that this film was a flop at the box office.
