The municipal corporation has decided to conduct door-to-door checks by forming ward-wise teams to prevent illegal water theft, direct pumping and ghost tap connections. Managers of various branches have been appointed as team leaders in this checking squad, while deputy engineers and ward officers have been included as members of the ward team. In order to maintain transparency in the checking work, deputy engineers of other wards have been appointed instead of the deputy engineer of the respective ward. Apart from this, the team will also include employees like assistant engineer, additional assistant engineer, work assistant and fitter of the water works branch. All teams have been instructed to conduct intensive checking at the time of water distribution in their assigned area. According to the commissioner's order, if a citizen is caught stealing water by direct pumping by placing an electric motor for the first time, then his motor will be confiscated and a fine of Rs. 2,000 will be imposed. If the Assamese does not pay the fine within 4 days, the tap connection will be disconnected. Even after paying the fine, if the motor is not taken within 30 days, the municipal corporation will sell it in scrap. If the same citizen is caught stealing water for the second time, the motor will not be returned, the tap connection will be permanently disconnected and a police complaint will be lodged against him under the relevant sections. The Commissioner has also announced strict action against ghost tap connection holders. If ghost tap connection is caught for the first time, then an opportunity will be given to regularize it. But if it is not regularized and the ghost tap connection is caught again from the same place, then Rs. A fine of Rs. 5,000 will be imposed and a police complaint will be filed regarding public property damage and water theft.
