At least 11 people have died after an avalanche hit a group of climbers in the Kabardino-Balkaria area of Russia's North Caucasus. Along with this, six other people have gone missing. The avalanche struck at around 5 p.m. local time on Sunday (September 6, 2026) on Mount Mizirgi, one of Russia's highest peaks.

A mass of snow that descended from an altitude of 5,000 meters buried a group of 15 climbers in the Bezengi Gorge.
According to preliminary data, seven people were killed.

It is noteworthy that the Caucus Mountain Range is divided into two major parts, one being the Greater Caucasus and the other being the Lesser Caucus Mountain Range. Mount Elbrus, located in the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range, is the highest peak in this area as well as in the whole of Europe, with a height of 5,642 meters.
