Surat Municipal Commissioner Transfer: The Gujarat High Court has taken a big action after the Gujarat High Court hit out in the 'Nasirnagar Demolition' case, which has become the most discussed and controversial in Surat. The Department of General Administration has transferred Surat Municipal Commissioner (SMC) Shalini Nagarajan (IAS: 2009) with immediate effect late on Tuesday night, August 11, 2026.

Where are the new appointments?

State Government, M. Nagarajan has now been appointed as the state project director of 'Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan' at Gandhinagar. In his place, the present Surat District Collector Tejas Dilipbhai Parmar (IAS: 2016) has been assigned the additional charge of Surat Municipal Commissioner under Section 39 of the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporation (GPMC) Act, 1949.

Along with this, Ranjith Kumar J., former State Project Director of 'Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan'. (IAS: 2005) has been appointed as Secretary, Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) at Gandhinagar.

Why was there a controversy? There was a contradiction in the municipality's statement

Nasirnagar demolition chapter has been the center of a huge controversy for the past few days. When the demolition took place in the area, the Surat Municipal Corporation initially defended that it had not taken the action. But later, the municipal commissioner himself. Nagarajan admitted that the demolition was carried out by the municipal administration!

Thus, this paradox of first laying hands and then accepting action - this paradox raised serious questions about the functioning of the municipality. When the entire matter reached the high court, the court took a strong stand and urged to take action against the officials responsible for the demolition. This decision taken by the government immediately after the court proceedings has sparked a huge debate in administrative circles
