A large network of child labour operating in the textile market of Surat was busted. A team of Udaipur's Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) and State Child Commission rescued 86 tribal children from different factories in Surat in a joint operation on Wednesday, May 13. All these children were found to be from tribal areas of Udaipur district. They were exploited for 5,000 to 8,000 rupees a month. In a joint operation by Pune and Udaipur police in Rajasthan, these children have been freed from the clutches of child labour. Investigations have revealed that all these children have been working here for the last two months. Not only that, the police pulled the children out of a hell-like situation. A 20-member team from Rajasthan struck the Pune police station area as per a pre-planned plan. The raids were conducted at about 6 locations including Sitaram Society, Muktidham Society and other locations along with the Pune Police. The rescued children are aged between 7 and 14 years. These innocent children were employed in small units attached to the textile market of Surat. Some children used to spin threads in sarees, while some children were running dangerous machines. These children were forced to work all day amidst the smoke and noise of the factory. Investigations have revealed that these children were paid only Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 per month in the name of labour. Taking advantage of poverty, the agents brought these children to Surat a few months ago. Surprisingly, most of the rescued children are school dropouts, that is, they dropped out midway.
An operation was launched after receiving information that two children were missing.
Udaipur Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) police inspector Dayalal Chauhan and his team informed the Pune police that two children were missing and were working as labourers here. On the basis of which the Pune P.I. V M Desai and his team conducted a mega search operation in Sitaram Society. The police inspected around 100 houses in the society, out of which 27 houses were found to be forced to work hazardously by children. He had been working as a labourer in Surat for two months
Police investigations have revealed that these children were brought from Rajasthan and employed as labourers in Surat for the last two months. Legal action has been taken against the labourers. The operation was carried out under the guidance of Surat Police Commissioner and senior officials, in which a team of Pune Police and Udaipur Police worked together. In 2019, children were rescued in a similar manner
The proportion of children being brought to Surat to work is worrisome. Earlier in 2019, the Children's Commission had raided Surat and freed several children from Udaipur. At present, the factory operators are being questioned strictly by the team and the parents of the children will also be contacted by the Rajasthan Police. All the children have been flown to Rajasthan by bus.
