Another gang rape incident reported in Manipur, woman says zero FIR filed by police

Imphal, August 10, 2023, Thursday

Another incident of gang rape has come to light in Manipur, which has been burning in the fire of violence for the last three months. A woman living in a relief camp has become a victim of gang rape and has lodged a complaint with the police. According to media reports, 37-year-old Parineeta from Manipur's Churachandpur district narrated a horrific story and said that her house was set on fire during sexual violence on May 3.

'The woman ran away with her son-niece-sister-in-law...'

According to the complaint, the woman, along with her son, niece and sister-in-law, fled to save her life, however, during that time, five-six kuki miscreants caught hold of her and gang-raped her. The woman did not step forward to save the family's honour and fear of social boycott and that is why she has filed a late complaint.

'I tried to stand up, but...'

"I was running away with my family members to save my life when I fell down... Before I could get up, the cookie miscreants caught hold of her and raped her and left me there...

'I wanted to commit suicide...'

The woman said that due to this incident with me, she was completely shattered and wanted to commit suicide, although she could not do so due to children...

Strict action should be taken against the miscreants

The victim further said, "My condition had become very bad, I was in shock... I went to the Institute of Medical Sciences, but kept going back without meeting the doctors there, although a few days later I went to JNIMS Hospital and got a check-up done with the doctor... After that I recovered normally and have come here to complain...   Strictest action should be taken against those miscreants... They have ruined my life...

Police register zero FIR after woman's complaint

Bishnupur police have registered a zero FIR after taking the victim's statement. It may be mentioned that a zero FIR is lodged at the place where the incident took place and the complainant is unable to register an offence at that place, after which the complaint is transferred to the police station near the spot.

More than 6500 police cases registered

The violence between the Kuki and Maitei communities has created a stir not only in Manipur but across the country. So far, 152 people have died in this violence, while more than 50 thousand people have been injured. So many people have been forced to take shelter in the neighboring state as they have become homeless. So far, more than 6500 police complaints have been registered in connection with the violence.

Earlier, two women were paraded unarmed in Manipur.

It is worth mentioning that a few days ago, a case of parade of two women in Manipur was reported unarmed. After this, there was anger across the country over the matter. The incident took place on May 4. Over 1,000 armed assailants attacked B Phinom village in Kangpokli district. Two men and three women from the Kuki community went to the forest and hid in fear of attack, but they were caught by the attackers. They were then rescued by the nonpoke Sekmai police and taken to the police station but the mob snatched them from the police. A 56-year-old man was murdered there, the women were paraded naked and the girl was gang-raped in public. When her 19-year-old brother tried to save her sister, she too was killed... Later, the three women somehow managed to save their lives.

What is the Manipur controversy?

The violent incidents started after a tribal solidarity march was organised in the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status in Manipur. At least 152 people have been killed in the violence since then. The Meiti community in Manipur comprises 53 per cent of the population and they mainly live in the Imphal Valley, while tribal communities like Nagas and Kukis make up 40 per cent of the population and mainly live in hill districts.
