Asmita Dey creates history, becomes first Indian to win gold medal in Judo

Commonwealth Games 2026: Asmita Dey, India's judoka at Commonwealth Games 2026 has achieved a historic feat. By winning the gold medal in the women's 48 kg weight class, she has given India a gold medal in Judo for the first time in the history of the Commonwealth Games. Asmita achieved this historic success by defeating Canada's Heidi Quech in the final.

The 23-year-old Asmita Dey of Tripura faced a big challenge at the start of the match. The Canadian took an early lead after losing UCO points and receiving a penalty. But Asmita did not lose courage and made a strong comeback in a span of 4 minutes to level the score at 1-1

Asmita Dey performed brilliantly throughout the tournament. In the semifinals, they beat Scotland's Summer Show to reach the final. She then won the 'Golden Score' against Canada's Heidi Quech in the final to register a historic gold medal for India. Asmita defeated Scotland's Eva Ewing in the quarterfinals via Ippoon. Then in the semifinals against Summer Show. UCO advanced to the final with a 1-0 victory. In the finals too, he gave India a Gold and scripted history.

Asmita Dey is a resident of Belonia town in Tripura. Before getting into judo, she competed in athletics in the 800 metres. His inclination towards judo shifted during the district level trials and he has since chosen the sport as a career. He has trained under the guidance of coach Yashpal Solanki at the SAI Regional Centre, Bhopal. He is currently a part of the TOPS Development Group of the Government of India

Harsh Singh also made it to the final

Judo is assured. In the semifinals of the men's 60kg weight class, Harsh Singh defeated Pedro Carlos Antoine Neto of Australia to enter the final. Now his eyes are also on winning a gold medal for India.

Asmita Dey holds special significance for Indian sports. This is the first gold medal for India in this particular category in the history of the Games. Never before had India won a gold medal in the women's judo 48 kg event.
