Do you also get heartburn after eating, know what experts say?

Health Tips: Heartburn after eating is a problem that most people are bothered by in today's time. Heartburn after eating is often ignored by people thinking it is gas or indigestion. But doing so every time can harm your health. Know why there is heartburn after eating

What does the doctor say

In many cases, the reason for this can be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In this, the acidic content of the stomach reaches back to the esophagus, which can cause irritation in the middle of the chest, sour water in the mouth, or problems like food coming back up. This problem can increase after meals because the pressure inside the stomach increases when the stomach is full. Eating too much, oily food, caffeine, chocolate, eating late at night, and going to bed immediately after a meal can also increase reflux.

The main causes of heartburn

  • Spicy and fried-roasted foods: Too much oily, chilli food increases the production of acid in the stomach and loosens the valves.
  • Going to bed immediately after a meal: Going to bed immediately after a meal helps the gravitational acid to come back up.
  • overeating: Eating too much at once increases the pressure on the stomach, which causes acid to rise upwards.
  • Caffeine and cigarettes/alcohol: Consumption of tea, coffee, carbonated beverages, cigarettes, and alcohol weakens the LES valve.
  • Obesity and abdominal pressure: Acid reflux can also increase due to extreme weight or pressure inside the stomach during pregnancy.

Why not Ignore
Occasional inflammation is not always a sign of illness, but discomfort 2 or more times a week should not be dismissed as just gas. Prolonged uncontrolled GERD can cause inflammation, wounds, contractions, and in some cases, Barrett's esophagus-like conditions in the esophagus, which are further linked to the risk of cancer. Maintaining a gap of at least 2 to 3 hours between meals and sleep, avoiding overeating, and identifying foods that cause frequent irritation can help control symptoms
