The excavation done by a JCB during the development work in the cat garden in Mehsana created a problem for the drainage system. The JCB collided with the main rising line of the drainage pumping station when the excavation was going on to lay a new pipeline to water the flowers and plants in the garden. The drainage of dirty water was stopped due to a breach in the line and the water started flowing back. The impact of the incident that took place late on Wednesday evening was more visible on Thursday morning. Drains overflowed at several places in Ward No. 3, 4 and 5 including Somnath Road, Manav Ashram, Visnagar Road and Gayatri Mandir Road. Drainage overflowed at several places in 3, 4 and 5. Locals were upset as dirty water overflowed on the road. On the other hand, dirty water was also spilled into the Gayatri Mandir canal and a foul smell spread in the surrounding area. Locals informed the corporators of the area as sewage overflowed from Somnath Road to Manav Ashram, Jail Complex and about 10 societies towards Eklavya, police headquarters Ashtakamal, Satyanarayana. Complaints reached the drainage branch as the phone rang one after another. After that, the team including the engineer reached Cat Bagh. As it would take time to repair the line permanently, the administration immediately started temporary arrangements. Instead of leakage, the water filled in the pit was drained by a tanker and an attempt was made to continue the disposal by reducing the water pressure in the line. Water was continuously leaking from the hole lying in the rising line. To repair it, it was necessary to make a slipper and fit a chamber clamp and install a bolt. The system said that there was only one worker in GIDC who specialized in this work. The worker was contacted as it was a holiday in the GIDC on Thursday, but as he was out, immediate repair was not possible. Finally, the administration tried desi jugaad. The wood was wrapped in a cloth and made into a butch and fitted in the hole of the line. As this reduced the leakage, the drainage of wastewater towards the town was continued with low pressure. In the evening, with the help of a workman, a cover was made on the line and repair work was carried out. The flow of both the pumping stations in the same line
There are two drainage pumping stations, old and new, in cat garden. Both the stations are run by motors of 75 HP and 50 HP respectively. The water from the sewer line of the area goes through both the pumping stations from the same rising line to Kasba Pumping Station. About 15 MLD of sewage flow per day passes through this line with pressure. After the breakdown in the line, the 75 HP motor was switched off and only 50 HP motor was running. So an attempt was made to continue the disposal of wastewater by reducing the pressure in the line.
