Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday announced the launch of the country's first multi-lane free flow barrier-less tolling system at Choryasi toll plaza at Kamrej on the Surat-Bharuch section (NH-48) in Gujarat. This is considered to be a major change in India's tolling system. Gadkari wrote on social media platform X that this state-of-the-art system facilitates seamless toll payment to vehicles without stopping. It uses advanced technology like Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag. He said the launch of the multi-lane free flow system is an important milestone towards digitization of India's tolling system and modernization of National Highway infrastructure, which is at par with global standards. Gadkari said barrier-less tolling will make life easier for citizens and also boost trade in the country, as it will make the movement of goods and logistics faster and more efficient. He also said the initiative reflects the government's commitment to developing world-class, technology-driven National Highway infrastructure, which is efficient, transparent and passenger-friendly. Recently, Gadkari had said that barrier-free tolling will be implemented on many national highways across the country from December. Equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition System
The new system is based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) along with automatic number plate recognition. Regardless of the speed of the vehicle, the sensors installed at the toll plaza will scan the FASTag to ensure toll collection. The new technology will make the movement of goods and logistics faster and more efficient across the country This system will not only significantly reduce travel time but also reduce traffic jams on the highway. At the same time, it is being claimed that fuel will also be saved. Reduction in vehicular pollution and toll management will require minimal manpower.
