Supreme Court says only High Court should hear Delhi hostel tragedy: We don't want to change the current situation; 7 people died in building collapse

The Supreme Court today heard the PG tragedy in Delhi's Satya Niketan. The court has decided to place the matter in the High Court. During the hearing, a bench of Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Justice R. Mahadevan said, "We do not want to change the current situation. Earlier, the court had said on September 8 that the matter will not be limited to Delhi alone, but the situation of dilapidated and illegal buildings across the country will be reviewed. On September 7, the Delhi High Court also heard the matter. The High Court said that both the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the University of Delhi are responsible for the accident. On September 6, a five-storey PG building collapsed in Satya Niketan, killing 7 people. Till Wednesday, 5 people have been arrested in the case. Reply sought from MCD and government During the hearing on September 7, the court sought a reply from the MCD, Delhi government, central government, NHRC and Delhi University within 10 days. Following this, on Wednesday, the CM also directed the MCD to investigate the illegal PG hostels. The MCD has already started demolishing the buildings near the PG building. Girls were PG in these buildings. The girls are evacuating the PG and shifting to another place. PG owner, manager and labour contractor arrested The Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested a youth named Sudhanshu in connection with the PG accident. He was running a PG in the building under the name of Hostel Days. His partner Shubham Tyagi is absconding. The duo had taken the building on lease in August 2025. Earlier, the owner of the building, Hariram Bansal, his wife Urmila, son Mahesh and labour contractor Sanoj were arrested. Hariram Bansal, his wife Urmila and son Mahesh were produced before the Patiala House Court on Monday night. Justice Bhavya Kharal sent Hariram and Urmila to 14-day judicial custody, while Mahesh received 2-day police custody. During the police remand, Mahesh said that repairs were being carried out to remove the problem of water and moisture accumulating in the basement on the complaint of the company running the PG. A power travel machine was also being operated during the construction work after draining water from the basement. Police suspect that the building collapsed due to the vibration generated by the machine and the already weak structure. The contractor said that the repair started 10 days ago. During interrogation, contractor Sanoj said that Mahesh Gupta had installed it for renovation 10 days ago. He used to get Rs 2800 per day. The work was to level the basement exactly like the ground floor, for which about 3 trucks of debris were filled in the basement. A wall was becoming a barrier in the shop space on the ground floor. That wall was removed to make room on the day of the accident. As soon as the wall was removed, the weak building could not bear the load and collapsed. Students evacuating PG from Satya Niketan 5 officials of MCD's South Zone suspended After the Satya Niketan tragedy, the MCD suspended Deputy Commissioner of South Zone Rakesh Kumar on Monday. Along with him, four engineering officers have also been suspended till the completion of departmental proceedings. After this, IAS officer Shashwat Saurabh has been given the additional charge of the South Zone of MCD. Saurabh, an IAS officer of the 2016 batch AGMUT cadre, is currently the Deputy Commissioner of South West Zone.
