A 3 percent increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for Gujarat government employees may be announced. About 4 lakh government employees of the state are likely to get this additional benefit. There has been a demand by the employees' unions to increase the dearness allowance for a long time. In view of this demand, the state government has now started action in this direction. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has given the green signal to the file related to the DA hike, sources said. A final decision in this regard is likely to be taken in the state cabinet meeting to be held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on November 4. The central government has recently increased the DA of central employees by 3 percent from 60 percent to 63 percent. Subsequently, the employees' unions of Gujarat also offered a 3% DA hike to the state employees on central basis. 4 lakh employees and 4.82 lakh pensioners likely to benefit
According to the data released earlier by the state government, 4 lakh working employees and about 4.82 lakh pensioners in Gujarat are likely to get the benefit of DA extra. This includes employees including state government, panchayat services. However, there will be clarity after the cabinet decision on who will get the benefit of the 3 per cent additional benefit in the new proposal. What is DA?
DA stands for Dearness Allowance. In order to reduce the impact of inflation on the household expenses of the employees, the government pays this allowance at the rate of a fixed percentage of the basic salary. This amount is determined on the basis of the basic salary of the employee. Generally, the DA is revised every six months keeping in view the inflation figures. Pensioners are also given Dearness Relief (DR) in the same way. How much DA was received earlier?
In May 2026, the Gujarat government had increased the DA of employees under the 7th Pay Commission by 2 percent. After this increase, the DA rate increased from 58 percent to 60 percent. Now if another 3 percent increase is approved, then the DA rate can increase from 60 percent to 63 percent. Therefore, the employees will get the benefit of an additional 3 percent dearness allowance on the basic pay rate. For example, if the basic salary of an employee is Rs 30,000, then he gets Rs 18,000 according to 60% DA. After 63% DA, you will get Rs 18,900, so there will be an increase of Rs 900 per month. Employees are eyeing the cabinet decision.
The increase in DA will increase the salary of the employees every month on the basis of the basic salary. If the government implements this increase from July 2026, then the employees can also get the arrears of the remaining period. However, the official announcement on the payment of arrears will also have to be waited. Lakhs of employees and pensioners in the state will keep an eye on what the government decides in today's cabinet meeting. Public holiday likely on Monday, November 9
The Gujarat government is likely to declare a public holiday on Monday, November 9. In lieu of this holiday, it is proposed to continue government offices on Saturday, December 12. A final decision will be taken after discussing this in the cabinet meeting of the state government to be held today. An official announcement will be made by the government after getting the approval of the Cabinet.
