West Bengal panchayat election nominations: Clashes between TMC and Congress-Left supporters

Incidents of unrest and violence have been continuously reported from various districts since the nomination process for the panchayat elections in West Bengal began on Friday. On Saturday, pictures of unrest were reported in several districts including Murshidabad, Birbhum, Howrah, Bankura, South 24 Parganas.

Clashes between TMC and Supporters of Congress-Left alliance

Supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition Congress-Left alliance came face-to-face at Domkal in Murshidabad over stopping opposition candidates from filing nominations and the two parties hurled bricks and stones at each other. As a result, the entire area was turned into a battlefield. Several workers of both the parties were injured in the stone pelting.

Police have arrested the TMC leader

TMC supporters have been accused of gheraoing the BDO office in Domkal to prevent candidates from opposition parties from filing nominations. Which led to this clash. Later a large number of police convoys reached and brought the situation under control. Police have arrested local Trinamool zonal president Bashir Mulla for roaming freely outside the BDO office with a pistol. After this, the political mercury heated up. 

What is the allegation?

It is alleged that he was guarding outside the BDO office with a pistol to prevent opposition candidates from filing nominations. The Left-Congress and the BJP have alleged that opposition candidates were attacked and driven away when they came to file their nominationpapers. The opposition alleges that everything is happening in the presence of the police.

Congress worker killed

On the first day of nomination, a Congress worker was also shot dead in Khargram in Murshidabad late on Friday night. The Congress has accused the Trinamool of murder. A case of assault on an employee has also come to light after entering the BDO office in Bhangar Number 2 block of South 24 Parganas district adjoining Kolkata. Trinamool is also accused of this. The Trinamool, however, denied any involvement in the incident.
