The kharikat canal development work in the 12.75 km stretch from Naroda crematorium to Vinjol Barala is in full swing, with more than 75 per cent of the work completed. The state government, after getting in-principle approval, closed the open portion of the canal from Vinjol Barla to Ghodasar, Vatva to Ropada Lake and SP Ring Road to Naroda Crematorium and has done tendering work for development. At an estimated cost of Rs 1003 crore, there is a possibility of closing the canal from the box at this place and making a road upstairs. Dilip Bagaria, chairman of the Water Supply and Sewerage Committee, said that while more than 75 per cent of the work of Phase-I in the Kharikat Canal has been completed, the state government has given in-principle approval to develop the remaining Kharikat Canal in the limits of Ahmedabad by covering it with a box. The 22.42 km long canal will be closed from the top box. The existing open canal will be covered with the design of RCC Storm Water Box Structure or Canal Box Structure at some places. For this, as many as 21 tenderers participated in the pre-bid meeting.
