The then Police Inspector (PI) V.A. Charan, who was involved in the fraudulent crime of demanding a bribe of lakhs of rupees by threatening to turn a complaint of a minor fight into a serious case of 'love jihad' at the Padra police station in Vadodara district, has been arrested. Charan has got a major legal relief from the Gujarat High Court. The High Court has accepted the interim bail plea of former PI Charan, who has been on the run for the last 7 months to evade arrest after a case was registered by the Anti-Bribery Bureau (ACB). However, the court granted him this relief and issued strict conditional orders to him to appear before it officially by November 17, 2026, record his statements and cooperate fully with the investigating agency.
He demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from the ghost of love jihad
In order to settle the case of a general dispute registered at the Padra police station and not to harass the accused party, the then PI V.A. Charan had implicitly threatened to turn the entire matter into a 'love jihad'. The bribe of Rs 2 lakh was finally fixed after the complainant initially demanded a hefty amount from the victim. In which the private middleman Sajid Ali, who had come to accept the bribe amount on behalf of the PI, was caught red-handed. As soon as the middleman was arrested, PI V.A. Charan went underground and was away from police custody for a long time.
Strict conditions of the High Court
The Gujarat High Court has granted interim conditional bail to the former PI till November 17, 2026. The court has clearly directed that PI Charan will have to appear before the investigating officer within the stipulated time frame and record his official statements. Any kind of non-cooperation or breach of conditions can lead to cancellation of bail.
